One of the most important elements of your outdoor plumbing system is your water spigot. With a tendency to freeze up during the winter months we have a couple tips for you so you do not experience a water leak.
- Disconnect your hose. This will prevent water left in the hose from freezing. Not only might it destroy your hose, it can also make the water freeze inside your homes plumbing causing the line it split.
- Cover your outside spigot with Styrofoam to insulate the line during the coldest days. This will also help with the insulation of your home by stopping drafts from entering.
Some may have a water spigot in a remote location on their property away from there home. Their is little to no insulation by these lines. Making sure that the line is buried at least 36 inches below the ground level or below the frost line which ever is greater. Having a licensed plumber for your outdoor plumbing is a must. Especially with these remote spigot locations. We make sure to install a shut-off valve inside the home with a drain. This allows us to shut off the water supply and blow out the line before the coldest days arrive to prevent the line from splitting open under ground or in your home.
